Purpose of the role
Parsons is a leading designer, manufacturer, installer and maintainer of fume & odour scrubbing equipment, working with a wide range of industries to deliver specialist air pollution control solutions. The Field Service Technician is responsible for the maintenance and servicing of gas scrubbing equipment at customer sites, ensuring it continues to operate safely, reliably and to the high standards Parsons is known for. The role is central to delivering the aftercare that underpins our customer relationships and service contracts and extends to supporting the installation of new equipment and working alongside the factory team when required.
Key responsibilities
Service scheduling and planning
- Plan and coordinate the service schedule, liaising with customer sites to agree dates and communicating the programme internally so engineering and production teams can plan around it
- Identify and arrange the consumables and materials needed ahead of each visit
Planned preventative maintenance
- Carry out planned service visits, completing all preventative maintenance tasks to Parsons standards and serving as the professional face of the business on site
- Maintain a consistent focus on reducing customer downtime and complete accurate service documentation following each visit
- Provide recommendations for repairs or upgrades to equipment
Breakdown response
- Respond to emergency breakdowns, diagnosing faults and striving for a first-time fix. Where this is not possible, implement an Interim Containment Action and work with the Engineering Manager to deliver a Permanent Corrective Action
- Identify recurring fault patterns and escalate improvement opportunities to prevent repeat issues
- Manage the inventory of Parsons-owned repair parts to support rapid response
Installation and fabrication support
- Support the installation and commissioning of new equipment at customer sites
- Work alongside the production team to manufacture and fabricate equipment when required
Health, safety and compliance
- Work in accordance with all relevant health and safety legislation, Parsons procedures and site-specific rules, reporting any concerns or incidents promptly
- Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks where required.
- Support the company’s Quality Management System and environmental management procedures.
- Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions promptly.
About you
Essential
- BTEC Level 3, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline
- Proven experience in a field-based maintenance or service technician role
- Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills
- Able to work independently, managing time and priorities on customer sites
- Professional and customer-focused, confident representing Parsons on site
- Diligent approach to health and safety for yourself and others
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Experience with gas scrubbing, air treatment, or chemical dosing equipment
- Familiarity with electronic control systems and instrumentation
- Experience completing technical service documentation and reports, alongside standard IT tools including Microsoft Word, Excel and email
- Experience preparing Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
- Knowledge of the safe handling and storage of chemicals
- Background in an industrial or manufacturing environment
- Experience as a field technician in any discipline, where strong electrical/electronic diagnostic skills are demonstrated
Certifications (training provided where not already held)
- Working at height and confined space entry
- Forklift truck operation, scissor lift and cherry picker (IPAF)
Working relationships
Internal
- Reports to the Engineering Manager
- Works closely with engineering and production teams on scheduling, technical findings, and installation and fabrication support
External
- This role is the primary point of contact for customer engineering and facilities teams
Ways of working
Travel
This role is classified as Regional, spanning the office and workshop in Walsall and customer sites across the UK and Ireland. A company vehicle is provided and overnight stays may be required.
Working pattern
This role is based at Parsons House, Walsall, with regular travel to customer sites and time in the workshop as the schedule requires.
