Executive Summary

A large water treatment provider, supplying water treatment and sewerage systems for a large portion of England, called upon Parsons when they needed help dealing with odorous gases arising as a result of exhaust air. The company has many treatment plants and processes in place, meaning Parsons expertise was needed to help bring the odor issues under control.

Challenges

The client required odour extraction for a belt dryer exhaust air prior to discharge to atmosphere. The plant is designed to treat a gas stream of 26,900 m3/hr containing ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and other trace odour elements.

Solution

Parsons provided a solution of odour abatement plant. The odour abatement package treats the air stream through two wet scrubbers and a carbon adsorber prior to discharge to atmosphere.

The ammonia and other basic gases are removed in the first stage using sulphuric acid as the scrubbing medium. The second stage operates under close pH and ORP control with sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite dosing to provide hydrogen sulphide removal. Insoluble odours are removed on the carbon bed.

Results

Using our range of odour abatement plant, Parsons were able to provide a complete solution to the client through wet scrubbers and carbon adsorption. Removing all the offensive gases through a variety of methods means cleaner, safer air is vented into the atmosphere.
