World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2019

Posted on 20th June 2019

The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2019 fell on the 28th of April. The World Day is an international campaign, organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO), to promote a safe and healthy work environment.

The ILO is dedicated to creating and furthering opportunities for people around the globe to work in safe and productive work conditions, highlighting the importance of security and respect.

They aim to maintain a system where governments, employers and workers participate in upholding rights, responsibilities and duties. This vision led to the creation of the World Day for Safety and Health in 2003.health and safety

Health and safety is an incredibly important factor in any workplace. Consequences of ineffective health and safety can be:

  1. Injury

555,000 work-related injuries were reported in 2017/18. This led to 3.9 million working days lost. Not only does this negatively impact the worker themselves, but it also leads to a loss of productivity for the company and the UK, with injury costs adding up to 5.2 billion.

  1. Ill health

1.4 million workers were reported to suffer from work-related ill health, with 595,000 of these categorised as stress, depression or anxiety. It is vital to ensure your employees feel safe and comfortable in their workplace so that they can produce the best possible work.

  1. Death

144 workers were killed in the workplace during 2017/18. Although a downward trend is being seen in the statistics for fatal injuries, further implementation of workplace health and safety can help further this.

Implementing a solid health and safety plan ensures that worker productivity and product quality is kept high, reducing the likelihood of financial loss.

2019’s World Day looked back on of 100 years of work in improving occupational safety and health, alongside looking to the future for the continuation of these efforts. The ILO endeavour to bring about major changes in technology and sustainable development, including climate change.
